Right-hander David Aardsma is scheduled to throw a bullpen session today as he recovers from the setback he suffered back in late-June. The 30-year-old has been throwing sliders and splitters as part of his recent flat-ground work, so whatever’s wrong with the elbow couldn’t have been too serious. Depending on who you ask, Aardsma either will or won’t be back this year. He’s recovering from both Tommy John and hip labrum surgery.
Whether he returns this season or not, the Yankees will surely exercise their $500k club option and bring Aardsma back next season, so the fact that he is getting back up on a mound and throwing in the bullpen is good news. The minor league season ends in a little more than two weeks, so I do wonder if he’ll spend some time in winter ball to get some work in if he can’t get into some rehab games. We’ll see.
